Japanese Denim: Cloth, Craft & Character

From indigo and selvedge to fit and care, a closer look at denim that becomes more personal with wear.

There is a particular pleasure in denim that records your life. The indigo softens, creases find their places, and a once-uniform surface gathers small differences. Japanese denim is valued for the attention given to that surface, and for the many ways a cloth can develop character.

More than one kind of denim

Japanese denim is not a single weight, texture or manufacturing method. Some cloths are smooth and restrained; others have visible irregularities in the yarn, often described as slub. Weight changes the feel and drape, but heavier does not automatically mean better. Choose for the way you want to wear the jeans.

Raw, selvedge and sanforized

Raw describes denim that has not been washed as a finished fabric or garment. Selvedge describes a self-finished woven edge, commonly produced on narrow shuttle looms. Sanforization is a treatment intended to reduce later shrinkage. These terms describe different things: raw denim can be sanforized, and selvedge denim can be washed.

Fit before folklore

The rise, seat, thigh and leg line decide how a pair feels in real life. Some denim relaxes with wear, but a waistband that hurts or a thigh that prevents movement is not a useful starting point. Shrinkage varies with the cloth and its treatment; it should be discussed before the fit is finalized.

Care without rigid rules

Wash when the jeans need cleaning, following the maker’s instructions for the particular denim. There is no universal requirement to wait four or six months. Turn them inside out, use an appropriate mild detergent and avoid unnecessary heat. Certain unsanforized cloths need an initial soak or wash; others do not. Indigo can transfer to pale upholstery, shoes and clothing, especially early in the garment’s life.

Natural fading is part of the appeal, but care should serve the garment and the person wearing it. Let its character develop through ordinary use rather than trying to force a particular result.
